Kyuquot Kayaking

Kayaking & Boating

There’s great paddling around the island lodge or paddle out to small coastal islands & islets in front of Kyuquot Village. Spring Island and Thornton Island are only a short paddle away.  McKay’s Cove and McLean Island are right beside the village. The islands in front of Kyuquot are home to all kinds of marine & prey birds for excellent bird watching.  Sea otters are all over Kyuquot, greeting paddlers wherever they go.  Explore the local inlets from the safety of our boats or bring your own to travel the coast. There is an endless coastline to discover; you’ll only wish you had booked a longer stay.

Hiking & Beachcombing

Walking trails are located by both lodges, with rewarding views just a few steps from your doorstep. On Sea Otter Lodge’s private 7-acre island, there is a 0.5 km loop to hike. On 30-acre Walter’s Island is a large circular network of trails that give you amazing views of the outside waters of the Pacific Ocean, as far as the eye can gaze. In McKay’s Cove, there is a scenic uphill hike to the top of Mount Baldy; a direct hike of 6.5 km and 550m of elevation offers the most beautiful birds-eye view of the area. On the top of Mount Baldy, you’ll enjoy a 270-degree view of Kyuquot Sound, which makes the uphill hike worth every step. In addition to these village walking trails, there are many lengthier hiking trails to beautiful viewpoints or stunning beaches, just a small boat ride away.

We can organise a custom beach adventure for you with either picnic-style lunch or a gourmet catered lunch prepared by our chef :

Kyuquot is home to some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches on the entire coast of British Columbia. Come discover the Kyuquot remote surfing experience like none other. A quick boat ride away puts you on a stunning, isolated sandy beach. Timed right, Rugged Point and Brooks Peninsula can offer a perfectly curled wave that is great for surfing a mid-size board.

If world-class fishing and endless kayak adventures weren’t enough, this unique surf trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Wildlife

Kyuquot is home to some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches on the entire coast of British Columbia. Discover the Kyuquot beaches and the creatures that call them home. Sea Otter Lodge is named after the friendly otters and pups that float around the bay, munching on crustaceans. Wandering the beaches, you can see bear, wolf, and cougar tracks. Sometimes they can be viewed on a beach from the boat or swimming from island to island. The marine birds and prey birds are plentiful. It’s easy to observe puffins, herons, oystercatchers, murrelets, cormorants, eagles, osprey, and more. If you come in the spring, you can see grey whales migrating.  Anytime in the summer season you can see seals, humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and if you’re lucky, you may spot a shark. Or maybe even a sea elephant.
