The People

Who We Are

The Plensky family are third-generation Kyuquot residents.

Our family came to Canada four generations ago in circa 1910 as coal miners from Poland. We settled on Vancouver Island by working in coal mines all over, from Cumberland to Extension, down deep in the dark with a pick axe. We’ve worked as loggers for three generations in Kyuquot, but our family is also known as excellent fishermen. We’ve worked as both commercial and sports guide fishermen.

We’ve lived, worked, and played in Kyuquot since 1968. We started as hand loggers and then operated a float camp for a 14-person crew for stump-to-dump logging. We love the remoteness & ruggedness of Kyuquot and decided to purchase our 7-acre island to give our children a true west coast upbringing. In 1992 we started construction on Sea Otter Lodge. We built our lodge using lumber hand-milled on our sawmill to create a unique island base for fun-loving adventurers to witness this one-of-a-kind area.

We’re also known for producing tasty food. We love to cook and create great meals using foods unique to the west coast.  We use only the freshest ingredients and herbs grown from our gardens.  We’ve received applause from our guests for our cedar-plank salmon, raves for our halibut rosemary red wine sauce and many have claimed our cod fish & chips to be the best ever.  Our secret recipe for Sea Otter Lodge’s chocolate cake is a fan favourite too!

We’ve hosted guests from all over the world who come to Kyuquot seeking an adventurous & special holiday.  Kyuquot is simply one of the most beautiful places on this earth. We understand the healthy balance of work and play. When we’re not working, we’re outside playing. We like skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking, exploring or boating. Join us and discover what it takes to become a real west coaster!
